어렸을 적 딱 일 년 동안 음악 시간에 피아노 반주를 한 적이 있었다. 중학교 1학년 때였나. 그 때 실기 시험 중에서 노래하는 시험이 있었는데 가사를 2절까지 모두 외워서 불러야 하는 시험이었다. 내 차례가 되자 선생님이 그냥 반주를 하면서 노래를 하라고 하셨고, 그 때 따지기 좋아하는 친구 하나가 “태동이는 악보를 펴놓고 가사를 보면서 부를 수 있으니 불공평한 것 아니냐” 라고 이의를 제기했다. 그 때 선생님이 하셨던 말씀이: “대학교에서 음악을 전공할 때 아주 어려운 과정 중 하나가 노래를 하면서 피아노를 치는 것이다. 그러니 너희보다 어렵게 시험을 보는 것이다.”
물론 중학교 1학년 음악 시간에 하는 반주래봐야 멜로디를 그대로 치고 왼손으로 간단한 화음을 쳐 주는 것 밖에 없었으니 나는 그 말을 이해하지 못 했었고, 마침 노래 가사도 제대로 못 외우고 있었던 터라 속으로 쾌재를 부르며 실기 시험을 봤다.

고등학생 때 피아노를 다시 시작하면서 그제서야 어렸을 때 선생님이 하신 말이 무슨 뜻이었는지 이해했다. 그 때 조규만의 ‘다 줄거야’ 라는 곡을 무척 좋아했었는데 어렵게 3단 악보를 구해 몇 번을 시도한 끝에 도저히 안 되겠다 싶어서 포기해 버렸다.

그래서 아직도 피아노를 치면서 노래를 부르는 건 나에게 희망사항으로만 남아 있다. 피아노 반주로만 이루어진 좋은 노래들이 너무 많아서 들을 때마다 제목을 적어놓고 악보를 찾아 놓지만 지금까지 하나도 제대로 완성시킨 곡이 없다. 아무리 별 것 아닌 반주라도 노래를 시작해 버리면 손가락이 갑자기 버벅거리고 목에서도 이상한 음정이 나와 버려서 스스로 민망해서라도 이내 포기하게 된다.

요즘 들어 부쩍 피아노 치는 시간이 늘고, 전에는 절대 못 칠 거라고 생각했던 곡들을 몇 개 칠 수 있게 되면서 자신이 생겼는지 다시 노래하면서 피아노 치기에 도전하고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 그 동안 계속 실패했던 이유가 너무 무식하게 덤벼들기만 해서라는 생각이 들어서 인터넷으로 검색을 해 보다가 다음과 같은 조언을 찾았다.

Step 2. There is this “thing” that happens when we try to play the piano and sing at the same time. I am sure you have experienced it. When you sing along with the car radio, your voice is strong and on key, and when you play the piano, you hit every note, but put the both together and it doesn’t work. You either sound like Lucille Ball or your playing goes all to heck. What is going on? Well, you have spent years concentrating on just the piano, in fact, we are taught to concentrate just on how we are playing. Soon as you start to concentrate on singing, then your playing gets mixed up and you get out of time, and if you concentrate on your piano playing then your singing is not very good. Add reading the words to the mix, and it sounds like an embarrassing mess.

Step 3. So, what do you do? First you have to learn each part independently. Start by memorize the words to the song. You don’t really have to start with all the verses if you are anxious to give it a try, just memorize the first verse.

Step 4. Now, play the piano part, but not all the piano part, just chords instead of the melody. This is the trick to help you to learn how to concentrate on both things at the same time. Try using both hands to play the chords. Hum along as you methodically play a chord to the beat of the music.

Step 5. Now, this time around, start with your chords and start singing the song, using only your voice as the melody.

Step 6. Next time through, the chords again, and singing along, but at the end of each verse, fill in with piano music. Play chords while your voice is the melody, and at the end of the verse let the piano take over.

Step 7. Fourth time through, give an introduction and then let your voice lead as you begin the song by playing simple chords. Add some melody with your right hand, but just occasionally. Remember your voice is the lead and the piano playing is the accompaniment.

Step 8. Practice every single day and you will start to get the hang of letting your voice lead and then when to let the piano playing take center stage. Listen to some Elton John for an example. You will now be able to hear him tone down his piano playing while he is singing and then punch it up between the verses.
