1. 여기가 아닌 곳을 향한 향수병

알랭 드 보통은 그의 소설 The Romantic Movement 의 초반부에서 주인공을 이렇게 묘사한다.

To take D. H. Lawrence’s definition, she was a Romantic in being ‘homesick for somewhere else‘ …

찾아 보니 원래는 D. H. Lawrence 의 “The Boy in the Bush“에 나오는 구절이었다.

He was sick with home-sickness as he flung himself into bed. And it seemed to him he was always homesick for some place which he had never known and perhaps never would know. He was always homesick for somewhere else. He always hated where he was, silently but deeply.

다만 언어가 미숙하여 표현할 수 없었던 마음의 한 부분을 정확히 잡아내는 이 구절을 보고 순간 움찔 하면서 왠지 부끄러웠다. 항상 여기가 아닌 다른 어떤 곳을 향한 향수병에 사로잡혀 있는 사람. 난 낭만주의자도 아니고 소년도 아니니 이런 말에 공감할 자격이 없는데 말이다. 😐

2. 단순한 불만족을 일반화하려는 습성

It was surprising how simple a transition could be from the thought: ‘I’m unhappy’, to the rather larger thought: ‘Existence on earth is a futile exercise’; how the vulgarity of the complaint ‘No one loves me’ might find itself sublimated into the elegant aphorism ‘Love is an illusion’. The interest lay not so much in whether existence and love were or were not futile [how could any individual possibly claim to know?], but in the way that the catalytic element could be disguised, leaving nothing but a most general, unself-referential maxim.

한국으로 오는 도합 31시간의 살인적인 여정으로 영혼이 반쯤 몸에서 빠져나가 있는 상황에서도, 알랭 드 보통의 뛰어난 관찰력과 해학은 나에게 웃음을 주었다. ‘나는 불행하다’ 에서 ‘지구상의 모든 존재는 무의미하다’ 로, 또는 ‘아무도 날 사랑하지 않아’ 에서 ‘사랑은 환각이다’ 로 생각이 변환되는 것이 얼마나 빠른지 직접 경험해 본 사람이라면 이 대목에서 웃으면서도 가슴이 쿡쿡 찔려옴을 느낄 수 있을 것이다.
